Pinellas Preschools Score Big

PURPOSE: Piece intended for newspapers to announce Pinellas preschools’ impressive state score for student kindergarten readiness.

Clearwater, FL–Everybody wants the best for their kids. From the safest birthing experience to the best college, parents throughout the country scramble for the most enriching opportunities to provide their children. Nowhere is this scramble more intense and emotionally invested than preschool.

In 2003, the state of Florida passed legislation to provide 4-year-old children free preschool instruction as part of its initiative to improve education throughout the state. The state-funded Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten program is designed to prepare children to successfully progress through the education system.

This past year, the state established a rate to measure the results of its initiative. The resultant Kindergarten Readiness Rate measures a preschool student’s readiness for Kindergarten based on Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards. A state-appointed screener administers a standard assessment to each student during the first 30 days of kindergarten. Each child’s assessment includes the name of the preschool that provided the student’s VPK education.

Two Pinellas County preschools received a perfect score for their efforts toward this end: Shadycreek Preschool at 2095 Belleair Road in Clearwater and Children’s Campus at 1695 E. Bay Drive in Largo. Each scored 300, the highest rating available for Florida kindergarten readiness.

Genevieve Gordon’s granddaughter, Lydia, attended Shadycreek last year. “The day I visited the school I could not believe the difference in the environment at Shadycreek compared to the school where she was previously enrolled and the others that I had looked at,” Ms. Gordon says.

“Everything she learned was presented with lots of fun and lots of love. With the positive learning environment provided, I believe that she will now have a positive attitude towards learning throughout the many school years ahead. She is going into kindergarten better prepared than her older sister, who attended another preschool school. ”

Preschool is the very beginning. It’s the foundation for learning. It’s the first place a child can discover how the world works away from the familiar comforts of home.

And now, more than ever, parents want to make the right decision.
